The Role of the Fundamentals Coach
Running an efficient practice is a Science, not an Art. Everything should be scripted. Indy’s, Group, Team, water/bathroom breaks. Everything.
You can find my Practice Plan and Format here: Organizing a Season Plan (The templates are available upon request)
We are coaching kids with a wide range of learning curves. Maintaining a fast paced practice AND coaching kids up can be a major challenge.
A simple approach to solve this issue is the Fundamentals Coach. This is a Coach or Coaches that are designated as ‘tutors’. Their primary purpose is to provide one on one and/or small group instruction.
You can utilize the Fundamental Coach(es) in the following manner:
- Group/Team sessions, little ‘johnny’ is having trouble with a skill e.g. stance/start, technique
- Send ‘johnny’ to the Fundamentals Coach for ‘tutoring’ while the Group/Team continues at full speed
- Group/Team sessions, ANY players that are not actively engaged in a drill can work with the Fundamentals Coach(es)
Attributes of the Fundamentals Coach
- Team player (not everyone can be a Coordinator)
- Even temperament (you will be working with the kids that need it the most)
- Knowledgeable of EDD’s (everyday drills)
- *** HC Tip: Put your EDD’s on laminated 3x5 index cards***

The Fundamentals Coach does not need to be a X’s and O’s guy. This is a great assignment for the Dad’s that are helping out or a less involved Coach.
If you do not have a high number of coaches, the Defensive coaches can serve as Fundamental Coaches for the Offense and vice versa.
Utilizing a Fundamentals Coach will greatly increase the development and participation of ALL players and Coaches ;)
