Preparing the Offensive Install
If you've read my article Organizing a Season Plan then you are familiar with our structured approach to the season.
A key component in Phase 2 is the Install schedule. Irregardless of your preferred offensive system, you will have to prioritize what gets installed and in what order.
Here is my process for this task.
During Phase 1’s System Development, we identified the following:
- Key Run & Pass concepts
- Run
- IZ
- OZ
- Power
- Iso
- Jet
- Buck
- Wedge
- Sweep
- Toss
- Pass
- Flood
- 4 Verts
- Swing
- Packaged
- Zone Option
- Yardage goals per concept
- Inside: 3 yds
- Edge: 5 yds
- Perimeter: 7 yds
- Blocking Schemes
- Zone
- Power
- Left / Spread / Strong / Over / Trips
- Right / Spread / Strong / Over / Trips
- Beast Left / Right
- Motions
- Jet
- Rocket
With this information identified, we prioritize the run/pass concepts into groups:
- Alpha
- Bravo
- Charlie
- Delta
The groupings are arranged by desired Point of Attack:
- Inside
- Edge
- Perimeter
- Screen/Pass
- Packaged
This allows us to look at all concepts of a given P.O.A and rank them with little confusion.

Once the concepts are categorized and ranked, we can begin to carve out the necessary practice time for each group.
Make note of two key points:
- Ensure the Alpha group is enough for you to ‘live on’. This group should be your ‘best of’ plays for each category i.e. Inside, Edge, Perimeter etc
- Resist the urge to skip ahead or around. Stick to your plan.
This process will assist in time management and practice/game planning. Also, it will help to identify necessary offensive/defensive skills that need to be taught. As well as their respective EDD’s.
Img 1: Practice Schedule
As you can see, we will live and die with the Alpha group until game 3. This will give us 6 weeks to focus on the Core concepts before moving the Compliments. This approach has the added benefit of ensuring that our Offense will look differently in the Post-season (for those pesky scouting teams). We do not want to be in a position where we’re trying to install new concepts (with little practice time) late in the season.
You can adjust this schedule based on your familiarity with your team and their respective maturation.
